Mathematics Not Compulsory for Admission 2026
Primarily, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has introduced a landmark change for the 2026/2027 academic session. During the National Policy Meeting held on Monday, May 11, 2026, it was officially confirmed that a credit pass in Mathematics is no longer a “blanket” requirement for all university degrees.

Indeed, this move is designed to favor students in the humanities who have historically been sidelined by the rigid requirement of a Mathematics credit.
Which Courses are Affected?
Notably, this waiver applies specifically to courses where Mathematics is not considered essential to the core curriculum. If you are targeting the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, you might be in luck.
The list of courses where Mathematics is no longer compulsory includes:
- Languages: English Language, French, Hausa, and Arabic Studies.
- Religious Studies: Christian Religious Studies (CRS) and Islamic Religious Studies (IRS).
- Creative Arts: Theatre Arts, Music, Fine and Applied Arts, and Creative Arts.
- Humanities: History and International Studies, Archaeology, and Philosophy.
Where Mathematics is Still a MUST
Specifically, don’t put away your calculator just yet if you are headed for technical or scientific fields. Mathematics remains a compulsory O’Level requirement for:
- Sciences & Health: Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and all Pure Sciences.
- Engineering & Technology: All Engineering disciplines and Computer Science.
- Social Sciences: Economics, Accounting, and Business Administration.
Other Essential 2026 Admission Rules
Consequently, as you prepare your application, keep these other verified 2026 updates in mind:
- Age Limit: The minimum admission age remains 16 years for this cycle.
- National Cut-Off: The “floor” score for university admission is 150.
- UTME Exemptions: Candidates for Colleges of Education (NCE) and non-technology Agriculture programs are now exempt from the UTME, requiring only four O’Level credits.
- Top Scorer: This year’s benchmark was set by Owoeye Daniella Jesudunsin, who scored 372.
