The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has raised a fresh alarm over a resurgence in examination fraud following the re-arrest of Emmanuel Praise Akataka, a notorious syndicate member accused of defrauding UTME candidates.
Despite being previously arrested and granted bail for identity theft and online fraud, Akataka allegedly returned to his illicit trade, luring unsuspecting students with fake promises of JAMB score enhancement and registration protection.
The “Sir Frederick” Syndicate Exposed
Operating under the aliases “Official Frederick” and “Sir Frederick,” Akataka reportedly targeted at least 94 vulnerable candidates. He convinced them to pay for non-existent services, including “inflated scores” and protection from having their registrations cancelled.
According to JAMB’s Director of Special Duties, Zainab Hamza (representing Registrar Prof. Ishaq Oloyede), the suspect’s tactics became even more sophisticated after his initial release. Investigations revealed that he:
- Re-targeted previous victims: He demanded N70,000 from students whose registrations had already been cancelled, claiming he could “influence” JAMB to reverse their sanctions.
- Used fraudulent identities: To gain credibility, he operated bank accounts under his father’s name and a fake account named “Zainab Rafiu,” whom he falsely claimed was a JAMB Director.
The Consequences of Exam Malpractice
JAMB has reiterated that its examination system is tamper-proof. The board warned that candidates who patronize these syndicates face:
- Financial Loss: Paying thousands of Naira for services that do not exist.
- Academic Ruin: Automatic cancellation of UTME registration and results.
- Legal Peril: Arrest and prosecution for criminal offenses.
The board highlighted its zero-tolerance policy, citing the recent three-year jail sentence handed to Ibrahim Abdulaziz for impersonation during the 2025 UTME as proof of its commitment to integrity.
How to Avoid JAMB Scams
Students and parents are urged to stick strictly to legitimate processes. Remember:
- No one can “upgrade” a JAMB score. The results are encrypted and stored on a secure central server.
- Registration protection is a myth. If a registration is flagged for fraud, no “agent” can reverse it.
- Official communication from JAMB will never come through private WhatsApp groups or anonymous “directors” asking for money into personal bank accounts.
