Abuja, Nigeria – October 14, 2025
The Federal Government (FG) scraps Mathematics for arts students in a new admission policy designed to make higher education more accessible. Announced by the Ministry of Education, this major reform removes Mathematics as a compulsory O’Level subject for arts and humanities applicants across Nigeria.

What the FG’s Decision Means for Arts Students
Starting from the 2025/2026 academic session, students applying for arts courses such as Law, English, Mass Communication, History, and Fine Arts will no longer need a credit pass in Mathematics.
Instead, they must earn five relevant O’Level credits, including English Language, specific to their chosen arts or humanities discipline. Science and commercial students are still required to meet the Mathematics credit requirement.
Why the FG Scrapped Mathematics for Arts Students
Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa called the change a “pro-student policy” that supports creativity and inclusion.
“For years, many talented students lost admission chances due to Mathematics,” he explained. “This adjustment encourages fairness and aligns with global practices where subjects reflect course relevance.”
The policy followed recommendations from the National Council on Education (NCE), which reviewed admission barriers caused by outdated entry standards.
JAMB and Universities to Implement the New Rule
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) confirmed it will update the UTME brochure and portal to reflect the change.
Registrar Prof. Ishaq Oloyede assured candidates that this is not a drop in academic quality. “It’s a refinement,” he said. “Each program should test skills that truly matter.”
Universities and polytechnics must now adjust their entry requirements immediately.
Mixed Reactions from Stakeholders
Reactions have been both positive and cautious.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) praised the reform, describing it as “a bold move toward equitable education.”
However, the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) warned that dropping Mathematics could reduce basic numeracy.
“Mathematics builds logical reasoning useful for all careers,” said NAPPS President Mr. Yinka Ogundipe.
What Students Should Do Next
Experts advise arts students to keep improving their general numeracy even though the FG scraps Mathematics for arts students in admission rules. Doing so helps maintain balanced academic growth.
This policy is expected to ease pressure on over 1.5 million UTME candidates each year and open new opportunities for creative minds across Nigeria.
Implementation and Next Steps
All tertiary institutions have been directed to update their portals and notify candidates before the end of the week.
JAMB will issue more details soon to ensure full compliance.
The Ministry of Education says this marks another step toward a fair, inclusive, and globally competitive education system.
