The Federal Government of Nigeria (FG) has reaffirmed the enforcement of its “No Work, No Pay” policy following the ongoing ASUU strike, now in its second week across Nigerian universities. The FG No Work No Pay ASUU Strike directive aims to ensure accountability among academic staff while pushing for constructive dialogue to resolve long-standing issues in the education sector.
The Federal Ministry of Education expressed disappointment that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) embarked on industrial action despite multiple appeals for dialogue. The government maintains that negotiation, not disruption, remains the most effective way to restore stability in public universities.
FG’s Directive to Vice-Chancellors
In line with the Labour Laws of the Federation, the government has instructed all Vice-Chancellors of Federal Universities to strictly enforce the “No Work, No Pay” policy by carrying out the following:
- Conduct a Roll Call: Take attendance and perform a physical headcount of all academic staff.
- Submit Reports: Provide a detailed list of staff who are working versus those participating in the strike.
- Suspend Salary Payments: Withhold payment for all staff who fail to perform their official duties.
Exempted Unions
The Federal Government clarified that members of the Congress of University Academics (CONUA) and the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA), who are not part of the ongoing strike, will continue to receive their salaries.
FG Calls for Dialogue, Not Disruption
While upholding the FG No Work No Pay ASUU Strike directive, the government reiterated its openness to dialogue with ASUU to find a lasting solution. Officials emphasized that policies like this are not punitive but necessary to protect academic integrity and ensure uninterrupted learning for Nigerian students.
