The House of Representatives has ordered the Federal Government to halt the planned introduction of Computer-Based Testing (CBT) for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
Lawmakers raised serious concerns that moving to a full CBT system could result in widespread academic failure, increased psychological stress, and even potential casualties among students due to the poor digital readiness of many secondary schools in Nigeria.
The directive followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by Hon. Kelechi Nworgu during Thursday’s plenary. Nworgu stressed that the transition to CBT, if not properly managed, could trigger a major crisis in the education sector.
Although the House acknowledged the successful deployment of CBT by JAMB, it noted that the realities in most secondary schools are significantly different. Many lack basic ICT infrastructure, computer training, stable electricity, and the digital literacy necessary to support a fully computer-based WAEC examination system.
Nworgu also criticized the Federal Ministry of Education for insisting on pushing ahead with the rollout despite widespread public objections, describing the move as unrealistic and poorly timed.
Following deliberations, the House urged WAEC and the Ministry of Education to suspend the proposed CBT adoption until schools are properly equipped with ICT facilities and teachers receive adequate training to manage a computer-based exam environment.
