WAEC Launches Computer-Based WASSCE Ahead of 2026 Exams
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has begun its move toward digital examinations, marking a major milestone for secondary education in Nigeria. The council recently conducted a trial run of its computer-based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), signaling that handwritten scripts will soon become history.
WAEC Begins Digital Trial
On Thursday, October 23, 2025, WAEC organized a computer-based testing exercise at its Testing Centre in Ogba, Lagos. Selected secondary school students took part in the trial, typing their essay responses on computers rather than writing them by hand. The session gave them first-hand experience with the new format that combines both essay and objective questions in a single digital test.
Leadership and Vision
Dr. Amos Dangut, Head of WAEC Nigeria, led the exercise. He explained that the digital shift aims to make examinations faster, fairer, and more transparent. According to him, computer-based testing will reduce malpractice, simplify marking, and align WAEC’s operations with international standards. Moreover, the council intends to ensure that all candidates, even those in rural areas, have equal access to the digital system.
