The Federal Ministry of Education has officially released the Revised National Guidelines for Admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions. This new policy aims to remove unnecessary barriers while maintaining quality and academic standards across all higher education levels in the country.
The framework applies to universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and Innovation Enterprise Academies nationwide. According to the Ministry, the revised admission structure ensures flexibility, fairness, and consistency across all educational pathways.

New Requirements for Universities
Under the revised national guidelines for admission, university applicants must obtain at least five credit passes in relevant subjects, including English Language, in not more than two sittings.
Mathematics remains compulsory for Science, Technology, and Social Science courses, ensuring that students in quantitative fields maintain essential analytical skills. However, flexibility has been introduced for Arts and Humanities students in line with recent policy reforms.
New Requirements for Polytechnics
ND Level
Candidates must have a minimum of four credit passes in relevant subjects. English Language is compulsory for non-science programmes, while Mathematics is mandatory for science and technology-related courses.
HND Level
Applicants must secure five credit passes, including English Language and Mathematics, in relevant subjects related to their chosen field of study.
These criteria ensure that polytechnic students acquire both foundational literacy and numeracy skills necessary for technical proficiency.
New Requirements for Colleges of Education (NCE)
Candidates seeking admission into Colleges of Education must possess four credit passes in relevant subjects.
- English Language is compulsory for Arts and Social Science programmes.
- Mathematics is required for Science, Vocational, and Technical courses.
This balanced approach ensures that teacher education remains comprehensive and inclusive of diverse subject needs.
Official Statement and Reactions
The announcement was made in a press statement by Folasade Boriowo, spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of Education.
Education analyst Ayodamola Oluwatoyin, speaking in Abuja, commended the reform, describing it as “a brilliant step that will open more opportunities and simplify the admission process for thousands of students.”
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, emphasized that the revision represents a deliberate effort to expand access to tertiary education and promote inclusivity in Nigeria’s academic system. He added that the Ministry remains committed to ensuring equitable learning opportunities for all eligible candidates.
