The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 13 new undergraduate degree programmes for Nigerian universities. The approval takes effect from the 2025/2026 academic session and forms part of the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) initiative.
Announced on October 22, 2025, the move aims to improve academic relevance, foster innovation, and align higher education with Nigeria’s developmental needs in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, nuclear science, and public health.

Background
The NUC, Nigeria’s regulatory agency for university education, introduced the CCMAS in 2023 to replace the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS).
Under the new model, universities can now develop 30% of their curriculum independently, while the NUC provides a national 70% framework for consistency and quality.
Developed in collaboration with academic and industry experts, the 13 new programmes were finalized in March 2025. The official approval was issued in a circular signed by Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, the Executive Secretary of the NUC.
List of Approved Degree Programmes
The newly approved undergraduate degree programmes are:
- B.Sc. Artificial Intelligence
- B.Ed. Christian Education
- B.Sc. Human Kinetics (Sport Management)
- B.Eng. Geomatics
- B.HLIS. Community Health Science
- B.Sc. Intelligence and Security Studies
- B.Sc. Islamic Economics and Finance
- B.Sc. Parasitology and Entomology
- B.Sc. Telecommunication Science
- B.Sc. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene
- B.Sc. Cooperative Economics and Management
- B.Sc. Nuclear Science
- B.Eng. Nuclear Engineering
Implementation Guidelines
Universities seeking to launch any of the newly approved programmes must:
- Circulate the CCMAS documents to their respective faculties.
- Develop the 30% institution-specific curriculum content within NUC guidelines.
- Undergo a mandatory Resource Assessment Visit to verify their staff, facilities, and laboratories before the programmes can begin.
These programmes are structured to combine academic depth with practical relevance, preparing graduates for careers in technology, health, environmental science, and security management.
Strategic Importance and Rationale
The approval of these new programmes addresses critical skills and knowledge gaps in Nigeria’s university system.
For instance, the B.Sc. in Artificial Intelligence aligns with global digital transformation trends, while B.Sc. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene supports Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to clean water and public health.
The inclusion of Nuclear Engineering and Nuclear Science demonstrates the NUC’s focus on energy innovation, while Cooperative Economics and Management promotes entrepreneurship and sustainable community development.
By integrating these emerging fields, the NUC aims to strengthen Nigeria’s global competitiveness and prepare graduates for industries with rising demand.
Conclusion
The approval of 13 new degree programmes under the CCMAS framework reinforces the NUC’s commitment to quality, innovation, and global alignment in higher education.
Effective implementation will depend on universities’ readiness and the NUC’s continued oversight to ensure academic excellence and resource adequacy.
