1.1 MEANING AND SCOPE OF COMMERCE

Definition:

• Commerce is the entire body of activities concerned with the distribution and exchange of goods and services from the producer to the final consumer. It is often referred to as the practical aspect of business.
• Commerce bridges the spatial and temporal gap that exists between the creation (production) and the use (consumption) of wealth.
• Scope of Commerce (Main Divisions):
  • Trade: The act of buying and selling of goods, which directly overcomes the hindrance of person (bringing buyers and sellers together).
  • Aids to Trade (Commercial Services): Services that facilitate the smooth flow of trade. These include Transportation, Warehousing, Banking, Insurance, Communication, and Advertising.

1.2 FUNCTIONS OF COMMERCE (OVERCOMING HINDRANCES)

Commerce exists to overcome the various obstacles inherent in the process of distribution:

• Hindrance of Person (Who needs the goods?): Overcome by Trade (Wholesalers and Retailers).
• Hindrance of Place (Where are the goods?): Overcome by Transportation (moving goods from factory to market).
• Hindrance of Time (When are the goods needed?): Overcome by Warehousing (storing goods until demand arises).
• Hindrance of Exchange (How to pay for the goods?): Overcome by Banking (providing payment methods like cheques and credit).
• Hindrance of Risk (What if there is loss?): Overcome by Insurance (providing compensation for specified risks).
• Hindrance of Information (What is available?): Overcome by Advertising and Communication (informing buyers about product availability and features).

1.3 EVOLUTION OF COMMERCE (STAGES OF EXCHANGE)

The development of commerce moved through systematic stages as societies grew more complex:

• Subsistence/Self-Sufficiency: People produced only what they needed for survival. There was no surplus and therefore no trade.
• Barter Trade: Exchange of goods for other goods (e.g., maize for cattle).
  • Major Disadvantages of Barter (WAEC Focus): Lack of Double Coincidence of Wants (requires reciprocal needs), Lack of Common Measure of Value, Indivisibility of Goods, and Difficulty in Deferred Payments.
• Money Economy: The introduction of a medium of exchange (money) solved the problems of barter, leading to specialized production.
• Modern Economy (Credit/ICT Age): Characterized by complex distribution, specialized financial institutions, and global trade facilitated by E-Commerce.
