The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has approved 85 underage candidates for exceptional admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions. This follows a special screening process aimed at identifying young candidates with outstanding academic performance and maturity.
Rigorous Screening and Final Approval
In a statement released on Monday, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s Head of Media, confirmed that all 85 candidates — each under 16 years old as of September 2025 — completed a multi-stage evaluation process.
He explained that after careful assessment, the candidates were cleared to proceed to their institutions and print their JAMB admission letters.
According to him, the policy reflects global best practices. In many countries, similar cases are treated as rare exceptions rather than general rules. Therefore, JAMB’s decision aligns with international standards while maintaining fairness and integrity.
Statistics from the 2025 UTME
Out of the 2,031,133 applicants who registered for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), 41,027 candidates requested special consideration under this category.
However, only a small percentage met the criteria. Meanwhile, 182 finalists who missed the last stage of screening may still submit formal requests through the JAMB Support Ticketing System. Each case will, consequently, be reviewed individually and decided strictly on merit.
Two-Day Grace for High Scorers
Furthermore, JAMB has given a two-day grace period, ending Wednesday, 29th October 2025, to candidates who scored 320 and above in the UTME but failed to upload their O’Level results.
Such candidates must, therefore, complete their uploads immediately and notify JAMB through the official ticketing platform. Failure to act within the deadline will, consequently, lead to disqualification.

In conclusion, JAMB reaffirmed its dedication to transparency, fairness, and academic integrity. The Board emphasized that the exceptional admission policy remains a privilege reserved for a few exceptional students, not a general exemption.
Moreover, it urged all applicants to rely solely on official communication channels for information and avoid misinformation circulating online.
