The Mogaji of Omotara Okugbaja in the Ita Baale area of Ibadan, Chief Moruf Oladejo Rufai, has raised alarm over the growing number of out-of-school children in Ibadanland. Describing the current figures as deeply worrisome, the traditional community leader called on local, state, and federal governments to urgently intervene with infrastructure and instructional support to reverse the trend.
Chief Rufai expressed his concerns while distributing educational materials and learning supplies to primary school pupils in Ita Baale and surrounding family compounds across the Ibadan North East Local Government Area.

Explaining the rationale behind his annual educational donation, Chief Rufai highlighted that basic education remains the foundational bedrock of any societal development. However, economic hardship and the surging cost of exercise books, writing materials, and school uniforms have forced many parents to withdraw their children from classrooms.
“Many pupils and students who should be in school are unable to attend due to the rising cost of educational materials. Government cannot do it alone. This annual gesture is my way of supporting children facing difficulties in accessing education and backing the broader educational development vision for Ibadanland,” Rufai stated.
Call for Multi-Stakeholder Action in Oyo State
To curb the rising out-of-school rate across Oyo State and the southwest region, the community leader urged key stakeholders to act immediately:
- Government Supply of Free Instructional Materials: Subsidize or distribute free exercise books and core textbooks to basic public primary schools.
- Community & Private Sector Support: Encourage traditional compound heads (Mogajis) and philanthropy groups to adopt local schools and fund under-privileged pupils.
- Upgrading Basic School Infrastructure: Ensure rural and peri-urban public primary schools are equipped with conducive classrooms and learning tools.
