The Federal Ministry of Education (FME) has issued comprehensive guidance to resolve widespread confusion regarding WAEC subject selection under the revised Senior Secondary School Curriculum. The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State, Professor Sa’id Suwaiba Ahmad, addressed numerous concerns as WAEC registration continues.

1. Subject Selection: Complete Flexibility
The Ministers emphasized that the curriculum is flexible and student-centered. Therefore, the Ministry imposes zero restriction on any approved subject choice.
- Specifically, a science student may select subjects classified under the social sciences or arts. Conversely, students in the arts and social sciences may also choose subjects traditionally grouped under the sciences.
- Furthermore, the school counsellor, parent, or school authority must properly guide the student’s choices.
2. ICT is Now Digital Technology
The FME clarified the confusion surrounding computer-related subjects:
- The Ministry renamed the subject Digital Technology. The change is purely in nomenclature and it does not alter the curriculum content.
- Consequently, students who previously offered Information and Communication Technology remain fully eligible to register for and sit the examination for Digital Technology.
3. Trade Subjects: Registration Guidelines
The Ministry also provided important guidance on Trade Subjects:
- The Ministry approved six specific trade subjects under the curriculum. A student may register for any of these subjects if their school offers them and teachers taught the subject.
- However, there is no obligation to register for a trade subject as a third subject if the student was not exposed to any of the six approved subjects.
The Ministry urges all stakeholders to rely only on verified information from official sources. This ensures a smooth and accurate registration process nationwide.
