The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially suspended its two-week warning strike, which began on October 13, 2025. The suspension takes effect from midnight on October 22, allowing lecturers to resume academic activities on Thursday, October 23, 2025.
This decision follows an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja between October 21 and 22, after renewed negotiations with the Federal Government and mediation efforts by the National Assembly, including its Senate Committees on Tertiary Education and TETFund.
ASUU’s National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, confirmed the development during a press briefing. He stated that the union suspended the strike “in deference to students, parents, the media, and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)” who advocated for dialogue. However, ASUU has issued a strict one-month ultimatum, expiring around November 22, 2025, for the government to resolve all outstanding issues or face a total and indefinite strike.

ASUU had earlier issued a 14-day ultimatum on September 28, 2025, citing the government’s “persistent neglect and insincerity.” When the deadline passed without resolution, the union declared a “total and comprehensive” warning strike to highlight long-standing funding and welfare concerns.
In response, the Federal Government reconvened talks through a committee led by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, meeting with ASUU on October 16 and 18. These sessions focused on finalizing the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement. Meanwhile, the NLC’s four-week ultimatum on October 20, 2025, added external pressure that hastened the suspension decision.
