Debunking of School Closure Circular: FME Labels Viral Memo as ‘False and Misleading’
The Federal Ministry of Education (FME) has officially debunked a widely circulated memo that claimed the Federal Government had ordered the immediate and nationwide closure of 47 Federal Unity Colleges (FUCs) due to escalating security concerns. Therefore, the Ministry, through its Director of Press and Public Relations, has categorically labeled the document as “false, misleading, and entirely fabricated,” urging the public, parents, students, and school administrators to disregard it.
The Fabricated Viral Circular
The document that caused widespread panic bore the letterhead of the Federal Ministry of Education and was circulated across social media platforms on Friday, November 21, 2025. Specifically, it contained the following claims:
- Claim: It directed the immediate closure of 47 Federal Unity Colleges across the country.
- Stated Reason: “Sequel to the recent security challenges in some parts of the country and the need to prevent any security breaches.”
- Signature: Finally, it was purportedly signed by the Director of Senior Secondary Education, Hajia Binta Abdulkadir, on behalf of the Minister of Education.
FME’s Official Rebuttal: FME Debunks School Closure
On Saturday, November 22, 2025, the FME issued a formal press release to counter the misinformation and clarify the government’s position on the alleged shutdown.
- Official Stance: Firstly, the Ministry stated unequivocally that the alleged directive did not originate from the Federal Government, the Federal Ministry of Education, or any recognized security agency.
- Warning to the Public: Furthermore, the statement strongly advised the public to “rely strictly on verified announcements issued through official government channels.” It warned against the risks of sharing unverified information, noting that such actions could exacerbate public fear and trigger unnecessary school disruptions.
Addressing Conflicting Directives
The debunking addressed the confusion caused by the circular, clarifying that while security alerts are active, they do not amount to a blanket, nationwide shutdown of all Unity Colleges. In other words, closures, where necessary, would be localized and based on real-time security assessments and recommendations from security agencies on the ground.
