The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed that English Language and Mathematics remain compulsory subjects for all students registering for their O’Level examinations. This clarification comes despite the recent review of admission requirements for tertiary institutions.
Government Explains the O’Level Policy
In a statement released on Sunday, the Federal Ministry of Education stressed that the new streamlined admission policy does not exempt any student from registering or sitting for English and Mathematics.
According to Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations, this clarification became necessary after widespread misinterpretations of the new O’Level admission framework.
Minister Alausa Clarifies the Reform’s Purpose
The Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, said the reform aims to make tertiary education admissions more flexible, inclusive, and fair. He explained that the policy ensures qualified students are not denied access because of deficiencies in unrelated subjects.
“The streamlining ensures that deserving students are not denied access to higher education due to credit deficiencies in subjects that are not directly relevant to their chosen fields of study,”

He noted that the framework follows global best practices and corrects earlier imbalances. Institutions may now admit students into certain programmes even if they lack credit passes in either subject. However, all students must still register and sit for English and Mathematics.
Core Subjects Still Mandatory for All Candidates
The ministry emphasized that the policy affects admission criteria only. It does not change the requirement to study or take English and Mathematics.
“All students must continue to take both subjects as part of their Senior School Certificate Examinations,” the statement said. “They remain vital components of a strong educational foundation.”
The government explained that this reform supports equitable access, inclusivity, and human capital development, while maintaining the quality and integrity of education in Nigeria.

The ministry urged students, parents, and stakeholders to rely only on its official communication channels and verified platforms for updates on education reforms.
It reaffirmed its commitment to building a credible, inclusive, and globally competitive education system founded on integrity, excellence, and equal opportunity for all learners.
Clarification on Earlier Reports
Some reports claimed that students in arts and humanities no longer need a credit in Mathematics for university and polytechnic admissions. The Ministry clarified that this applies only to specific programmes. At the O’Level stage, English and Mathematics remain compulsory for all students.
