CHAPTER 5: COMPUTER SOFTWARE

5.1 SYSTEM SOFTWARE

• Definition: Programs designed to manage and control the computer hardware and provide a platform for application software to run. It makes the computer system operational.
• Types of System Software:
  1. Operating Systems (OS): (See 5.2).
  2. Translators: (See below).
  3. Utility Programs: Small programs that perform maintenance tasks (e.g., Antivirus software, Disk Cleanup, Disk Defragmenter, Editors).
• Translators: Convert code written in a programming language into machine code (binary).

• Assemblers: Translate assembly language (low-level) into machine code.
• Compilers: Translate a High-Level Language program all at once before execution. If errors exist, they are all reported together. Produces a fast, standalone executable file.
• Interpreters: Translate and execute a High-Level Language program line-by-line. Execution stops at the first error. Slower execution but easier for debugging.

5.2 OPERATING SYSTEMS (OS)

• Definition: The master control program that acts as the interface between the user, the application software, and the hardware.
• Types/Examples: Windows, Linux, UNIX, macOS, MS-DOS, Android, iOS.
• Functions of OS:
  1. Memory Management: Allocates and de-allocates primary memory to programs.
  2. Process Management: Manages the CPU, schedules tasks, and coordinates multi-tasking.
  3. File Management: Organizes, stores, and retrieves files on secondary storage.
  4. Security: Provides password protection and access control.
  5. I/O Management: Handles communication between the computer and peripherals.
• GUI (Graphical User Interface) OS: Uses icons, menus, windows, and pointing devices (e.g., Windows, Android). User-friendly and intuitive.
• Command-line OS (CUI): Requires the user to type text commands to interact with the system (e.g., MS-DOS, Linux Shell). Faster and more efficient for experienced users.

5.3 APPLICATION SOFTWARE

• Definition: Programs designed to help users perform specific tasks or solve a particular set of problems.
• Common Application Packages:
  • Word Processing: For creating, editing, formatting, and printing text documents (e.g., MS Word).
  • Spreadsheet: For numerical calculations, data analysis, budgeting, and charting (e.g., MS Excel).
  • Database Management System (DBMS): For storing, organizing, querying, and retrieving large structured data (e.g., MS Access, Oracle).
  • Graphics: For creating, manipulating, and editing visual images (e.g., CorelDraw, Adobe Photoshop).
• Specialized Software: Programs tailored for a specific industry or function (e.g., Payroll and Accounting software, Hospital Management Systems, Banking Transaction Systems, Statistical Analysis Software).
