The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a total and indefinite strike at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) over unresolved salary shortfalls and unpaid allowances. Concurrently, the union’s branch at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has called off its eight-day work boycott following an agreement reached with university management regarding academic entitlements.

According to a statement read by UNIPORT ASUU Branch Secretary, Comrade Tarila Amakoromo, the decision followed the expiration of a 48-working-hour ultimatum given to the university management. Key grievances include:
- Incomplete Salary Payments: Non-payment of full monthly salaries for June, July, and August 2026.
- Responsibility Allowance Withholding: Incomplete responsibility allowances for academic staff, particularly for lecturers in the School of Health Sciences under CONMESS and CONHESS structures.
- Exclusion from Allowance Payments: Alleged exclusion of ASUU members from monthly responsibility allowances paid to other university staff unions for over two years.
All lectures, examinations, invigilations, and statutory meetings at UNIPORT remain suspended, with a local Strike Monitoring Team constituted to enforce compliance across all campuses.
Why UNIBEN ASUU Suspended Industrial Action
In contrast, ASUU Chairman at UNIBEN, Comrade Enaruna Edosa, confirmed that members voted to suspend their eight-day strike after management released outstanding entitlements and provided clear documentation on salary disbursements. The university administration also committed to settling the Council component of the Earned Academic Allowance (EAA).
