The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) management has taken a decisive step to protect the lives of 2026 Batch A (Stream 1) corps members. In response to rising security threats, the NYSC relocates orientation camps in Kwara and Kaduna to more secure, urban environments. This move highlights the scheme’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of Nigerian graduates during their mandatory service year.
New Camp Locations in Kwara and Kaduna
Persistent security reports regarding banditry and kidnapping in rural areas prompted these changes. The NYSC relocates orientation camps in Kwara and Kaduna as follows:
- Kwara State: The orientation camp has moved from its permanent site in Yikpata (Edu LGA) to the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin.
- Kaduna State: The scheme now uses Government College, Kurmin Mashi, Kaduna, as a temporary site, moving away from the high-risk area near the Kaduna-Abuja highway.
Other states including Borno, Plateau, and Kebbi have also seen similar relocations to ensure that orientation exercises proceed without interruption or danger.
₦500 Million Spent on Medical Welfare
Beyond security, the NYSC has demonstrated its dedication to the health of participants. Reports indicate that the scheme has spent approximately ₦500 million on critical medical interventions for corps members.
During a recent briefing, the Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, explained that while the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) covers standard care, the NYSC often intervenes in high-cost emergency cases. Significant expenditures include ₦28 million for a spinal cord injury treatment and ₦33 million for prosthetic limbs following a road accident.

As the NYSC relocates orientation camps in Kwara and Kaduna, it is also reinforcing safety protocols across the country. The scheme is working closely with the Nigerian Army and Police to provide military escorts for corps members traveling to high-risk zones.
