The House of Representatives has renewed pressure on the Federal Ministry of Education and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) as Reps call for postponement of WAEC CBT exams originally planned for the 2026 school examination cycle. Lawmakers insist that the shift must be delayed until 2030 due to the nation’s inadequate ICT infrastructure, especially in rural schools.

Why Reps Call for Postponement of WAEC CBT Exams
Lawmakers argue that many schools still lack basic facilities required for a full Computer-Based Testing (CBT) system. Rural communities face the greatest challenge, as most do not have computer halls, trained ICT teachers, stable electricity, or reliable internet connectivity.
WAEC had earlier announced that the 2026 May/June examination would transition to CBT, following the partial rollout for private candidates in 2024. But the House insists the system is not ready for nationwide adoption.
Budgetary Requirements for a 2030 WAEC CBT Rollout
The House directed the Federal Ministry of Education and state governments to include the following in their 2026–2029 budgets:
- Recruitment of qualified computer and ICT teachers
- Construction of computer halls with functional internet
- Provision of standby generators for constant power
- Comprehensive evaluation of private schools’ readiness
According to lawmakers, these steps must be completed before the full CBT model can begin in 2030.
Motion Behind the Call for Postponement
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Rep. Kelechi Wogu, titled:
“Need for Intervention to Avert the Pending Massive Failure of Candidates Intending to Write the 2026 WAEC Examination Using Computer-Based Testing (CBT), Capable of Causing Depression and Deaths of Students.”
He argued that WAEC examinations are central to students’ admission into tertiary institutions, which require at least five relevant credits including English and Mathematics.
Concerns About System Failures and Student Welfare
Rep. Wogu cited recent technical issues, such as the temporary shutdown of the 2025 WAEC result portal, which caused panic among thousands of candidates. He stressed that a premature CBT rollout could create:
- Massive failure
- Frustration
- Depression
- Social and psychological distress
He also emphasized that WAEC’s exam structure—covering at least nine subjects with theory, practicals, and objectives—cannot be rushed into a CBT framework designed for JAMB’s single-subject testing format.
Infrastructure Gap Across 25,500 Schools
About 25,500 schools are expected to sit for the 2026 examination, yet many still lack:
- Trained ICT personnel
- Functioning computer labs
- Stable power supply
- Internet-enabled testing facilities
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and several school administrators have also opposed the 2026 timeline.
Final Recommendation
The House advised a minimum three-year preparation window, recommending that full implementation of WAEC CBT exams begin no earlier than the 2029–2030 academic session.
