The Federal Government has launched the TVET Nigeria empowerment programme to equip nearly one million young Nigerians with practical, job-ready skills. The initiative, unveiled by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa (CON), supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for youth development and self-reliance.
TVET Nigeria Empowerment Programme Overview
During an inspection visit to AFS Vocational Hub, Garki, and Golden Finger Farms and Ranches Ltd, Abuja, Dr. Alausa explained that more than 250,000 trainees are already enrolled across 2,600 centres nationwide.
He noted that the programme combines 86 trades into 28 key sectors, such as fashion design, plumbing, livestock production, modern farming, and GSM repair. With a 90% practical and 10% theoretical approach, trainees gain market-relevant, hands-on skills.
Key Focus Areas and Training Sectors
The TVET Nigeria empowerment initiative aims to bridge the unemployment gap and promote entrepreneurship. So far, WAEC has verified 960,000 applications through the National Identity Number (NIN) and Bank Verification Number (BVN) system, from over 1.3 million applicants.
Each participant receives a ₦22,500 monthly stipend, while approved training centres earn ₦45,000 per trainee. Graduates also get starter packs and access to Bank of Industry (BOI) loans at single-digit interest rates to launch small-scale enterprises.
Youth Empowerment Through Skills and Support
Dr. Alausa reaffirmed that technical and vocational education sits at the heart of Nigeria’s development strategy. He stressed that the programme will help young Nigerians build independence, create jobs, and reduce poverty.
To sustain this effort, 5% of TETFund’s annual budget now supports TVET implementation. This ensures stable funding for infrastructure, equipment, and updated training curricula.
