FG Addresses Arbitrary Increases
The Federal Ministry of Education has initiated decisive monitoring measures to check and sanction public and private secondary schools inflating registration fees for the 2027 May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The regulatory intervention follows growing complaints from parents and guardians regarding unapproved administrative charges and inflated bills levied by school administrators ahead of the 2027 examination cycle.
Official 2027 Examination Fee Structure Overview
| Parameter | Official Specification |
| Examining Authority | West African Examinations Council (WAEC) |
| Affected Examination | 2027 WASSCE for School Candidates (May/June) |
| Official Approved Fee | 50,000 Naira (Harmonized with NECO) |
| Regulatory Authority | Federal Ministry of Education |
| Key Enforcement Focus | Sanctioning Illegal School Add-Ons & Overcharging |
Background and Official Approved Fee Benchmark
Earlier in the year, the Federal Ministry of Education approved a uniform benchmark fee of 50,000 Naira for both WAEC and NECO school candidates starting from the 2027 examination session.
However, reports indicate that several secondary schools across the country have unilaterally inflated the total registration demand, forcing parents to pay extortionate sums under the guise of administrative logistics, graduation levies, and compulsory tutorial charges.
Directives Issued by Federal Ministry of Education and WAEC
- Strict Monitoring & Sanctions: The Ministry of Education warned school principals and proprietors that any institution caught charging fees above the federally approved 50,000 Naira threshold will face severe administrative sanctions, including deregistration as an official examination center.
- Transition to Computer-Based Testing (CBT): WAEC confirmed that it is continuing its progressive rollout of Computer-Based Testing (CBT) models and enhanced biometric screening protocols to maintain examination integrity and eliminate malpractice syndicates.
- Guidance for Parents & Candidates: Parents are advised to demand official fee breakdowns from school authorities and report extortionate charges directly to state ministries of education or Federal Ministry of Education monitoring desks.
