4.1 NATURE MIRACLES
STILLING THE STORM (MATT 8:23-27, MARK 4:35-41, LUKE 8:22-25)
The miracle of stilling the storm is recorded in all synoptic gospels and all the details are the same except that Mark records the actual word Christ used in rebuking the storm, “Peace, be still.” Mark equally records that Christ was in the stern, asleep on a cushion at the time, when the disciples went to wake him. Another area of difference is on the actual statement the disciples made to Jesus concerning the storm. According to Mark, the disciples said, “Teacher, do you not care we perish?” But Matthew records: “save, Lord; we are perishing” while Luke records: “Master, Master, we are perishing.”
Matthew further records that Jesus and his disciples were in a boat when there arose a great storm but Jesus was asleep. His disciples went and woke him and said to him, “Save, Lord; we are perishing.” Jesus said to them, “why are you afraid, o men of little faith?” Jesus then rebuked the winds and the sea and there was a great calm. The men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this that even winds and sea obey him?”

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE MIRACLE OF STILLING THE STORM
The miracle of stilling the storm shows that:
1. Jesus has power over nature. At his command, the storm stopped.
2. Christ is sympathetic to man’s fears and needs. he really cares for
3. He rebuked the storm to restore the confidence of the disciples who were greatly afraid. So, also does he restore the confidence of the present-day believers.
FEEDING OF FIVE THOUSAND PEOPLE (MATTHEW 14:13-24; MARK 6:30-44; LUKE 9:10-17)
The miracle of the feeding of five thousand people is recorded in the three synoptic gospels. Most of the details are the same and all of them agree that the miracle took place at a lonely place, but Luke added that the lonely place was in the region of Bethsaida. Luke and Mark did not state any special reason for going to this lonely place, but Matthew stated that Jesus and his disciples went to the lonely place when he heard about the death of John the Baptist who was beheaded by Herod Antipas.
According to Matthew, when Jesus heard about the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a lonely place. When the crowd learnt of it, they followed him to the place on foot. As Jesus went ashore, he saw the great multitude and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. When it was evening, his disciples went to him and told him that they were in a lonely place and since the day was over, he should send the crowd out to seek food for themselves. But Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” The disciples replied that they had only five loaves and two fishes. He ordered them to bring them to him. When they brought it, he took them and looked up to heaven and blessed and broke and gave the bread to the disciples. The disciples gave the bread to the crowd who were sitting down on the grass. When they had eaten and were satisfied, the disciples gathered up about twelve baskets of the broken pieces as left-overs. Those who ate were about five thousand, besides women and children.
FEEDING OF FOUR THOUSAND (MATTHEW 15:32-39; MARK 8: 1-2)
The miracle of the feeding of four thousand is found only in Matthew and Mark and the details of the narrative are essentially the same. According to Matthew, Jesus called his disciples and said to them that he had compassion on the crowd because he had been with them for about three days without food and he was not willing to send them away to avoid casualties on the way.
Jesus asked them how many loaves of bread they had and they said seven loaves and a few small fishes. He commanded the crowd to sit down on the ground. He took the bread and fishes and gave thanks to God. He broke the bread and gave to the disciples who then gave to the crowd. After they had eaten and were satisfied, seven baskets of the broken pieces were left over. Those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE FEEDING OF FIVE THOUSAND AND FOUR THOUSAND PEOPLE
By these miracles, Christ showed that:
- he is the messiah who could cater for people’s needs – physical and spiritual.
- He is a caring and generous master.
- God is an all-sufficient father, 1., can provide for all our needs.
- God is a benevolent (generous) father.
- God is a compassionate father.
- God is a miracle worker.

WALKING ON THE SEA (MATTHEW 14:22-26; MARK 6:45-52)
The miracle of walking on the sea is recorded in Mathew and Mark but it is more detailed in Mark. Mark’s account has it that after the feeding of the 4,000 people, Jesus made his disciples get into the boat to go before him to Bethsaida while he dismissed the crowd. When he left the crowd, he went to the mountain to pray. In the evening, the boat was on the sea and he alone was on the land. He saw that his disciples were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them. Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. He wanted to pass by them, but when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost. They cried out, because they were afraid and he spoke to them saying, “Take heart, it is I; have no fear. ” He got into the boat with them and the wind ceased. They were astonished to see the miracle.
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE MIRACLE
- This miracle equally demonstrated the power of the Lord Jesus Christ over nature.
- It demonstrated his expressed desire to help people in times of trouble and need.
- He answers those who call on him in time of trouble just as he came to the disciples and stopped the storm that was disturbing them.
4.2 THE HEALING MIRACLES
HEALING OF THE LEPER (MATTHEW 8:1-4, MARK 1:40-45, LUKE 5:12-10)
All the synoptic gospel writers gave account of the healing of the leper and the details are almost the same. All of them recorded that Christ charged the leper to keep the source of his healing secret, but he should show himself to the priest. According to Matthew, when Jesus came down from the mountain, a great crowd followed him. A leper came to him and knelt down before him and said, “Lord; if you will, you can make me clean.” Jesus stretched out his hand of his leprosy. Jesus charged him and touched him saying, “I will be clean. ” Immediately, the man was cleansed of his leprosy.
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE INSTRUCTIONS JESUS GAVE THE CLEANSED LEPER.
- Jesus wanted to keep his Messiahship secret because it was too early to expose Himself as He needed some time for His teaching to permeate people’s hearts.
- Again, His teaching Ministry was of greater importance than His healing Ministry. Hence if those healed were to spread the news about their healing, the crowd that would come for similar healings would disturb His teaching Ministry.
- Jesus obeyed the Mosaic Law especially as it was in accordance with God’s law of Mercy and kindness. It was also the role of priests to declare a leper clean to make him acceptable in society. Jesus’ concern for the sick made Him advise the healed leper to do everything to remove the stigma of ostracism he had suffered for so long.
HEALING OF THE PARALYTIC (MATTHEW 9:1-8; MARK 2:1-12; LUKE 5:17-26)
The miracle of the healing of the paralytic is recorded in the three synoptic gospels. Mark’s account appears more elaborate than others. Therefore, we are going to take Mark’s account as our narrative framework here. When Jesus returned to Capernaum, according to Mark, it was reported that when He was at home a great crowd gathered so much that there was no room to contain them. Four men brought a paralytic to him, but when they saw that There was no chance for them to get near him, they removed the roof above him and from there, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic lay. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “my son, your sins are forgiven.” The scribes who were around questioned in their hearts why he spoke that way and felt that he was blasphemous because to them it is only God who can forgive. Jesus then said to the paralytic, “Rise, take up your bed and go home”. Immediately, the man rose and went home. When the crowd saw this, they marveled.
LESSONS TO LEARN / SIGNIFICANCE
- Jesus was touched to heal the man because of the great faith demonstrated by his friends. The lesson to learn in this case is that if people want miracles, they must endeavor to exercise the same level of faith to draw the attention of God in their life.
- Jesus said to the man “your sins are forgiven”. This means that his sickness could have come as a result of sin. Christians should, therefore, avoid sinful life in order not to attract sickness into their life.
THE CENTURION’S SERVANT (MATTHEW 8:5-13; LUKE 7:1-10)
As Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came and appealed to Jesus to come and heal his servant who was paralyzed at home. Jesus promised him that he was coming to heal him, but the centurion considered himself a sinner who was not worthy to have a man like Jesus under his roof. All that he needed was for Jesus to speak the word and his servant would be healed at once. Apparently, Jesus was highly impressed by the man’s expression. So, he said to those who followed him: “Truly I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you many will come from east and west and sit at table with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into outer darkness; there, men will weep and gnash their teeth.” (Matthew 8: 10 – 12). Jesus then said to the centurion, “Go, be it done for you as you have believed.” And so, it was, the man’s servant at home was healed immediately.
LESSONS TO LEARN
- The healing of the centurion’s servant became possible because of the great faith the centurion had. Jesus was impressed and hence he healed the servant. Likewise, believers of today should have and demonstrate faith in God.
- The centurion was a Roman and not a Jew and this shows that the salvation of God is open to all who have faith in Christ Jesus. Christians must equally express faith in all things they do.

HEALING OF THE DEMONIAC (MATTHEW 8:28-34; MARK 5:1 – 20; LUKE 8:26-39)
Mark’s and Luke’s account of the healing of the demoniac were more detailed than Mathew’s. Matthew wrote that there were two demoniacs whereas Mark and Luke said there was only one demoniac. In Mark’s account, when Jesus came to the country of Gadarenes, a man with unclean spirit from the tombs met him as he came out of the boat. All efforts to bind this man with chains and fetters had proved abortive as he had broken all into pieces. So, nobody had the strength to bind him anymore.
Night and day among the tombs, he cried out and bruised himself with stones. When the man saw Jesus, he ran and worshiped him saying, “What do you have to do with me, Jesus, son of the Most High God? I assure you by God, do not torment me. ” Jesus commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Jesus asked him what his name was and he answered, “My name is legion: for we are many.
The unclean spirits begged Jesus to send them to the swine. Jesus allowed them and they entered the swine. The herd numbering about two thousand rushed down the steep bank into the sea and were drowned. The herdsmen fled and told the story in the city and in the country. People came out and saw the man with the unclean spirit clothed and in his right mind. When the people saw what had happened, they told the story to the owners of the herd. They begged Jesus to leave their neighborhood. As Jesus was about to leave, the man who had had the unclean spirit wanted to follow him, but Jesus refused and advised him to go and declare what God had done for him to his friends at home. The man went away and proclaimed throughout Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him and all who heard him marveled.
LESSONS TO LEARN / SIGNIFICANCE
- The divine nature of Jesus is attested to by the demons who recognized him and called him the son of the most high God.
- The owners of the herd were concerned about the loss of their herd rather than the man that was saved, but Jesus valued the man more than the two thousand pigs. This shows the importance Jesus attached to mankind.
- Contrary to Jesus’ attitude of wishing to keep his miracles secret, he charged the man he healed to go and testify about the goodness of the Lord to trends and people. This was because the people did not allow Jesus to preach in the territory anymore. Jesus, therefore, wanted the man to be the evangelist that would proclaim the gospel in the district. Invariably, everyone who has tasted and received the miraculous work of the Lord is expected to proclaim it to others.
