What Kind of Human Being Should Secondary Education Produce?

For generations, secondary education has largely been organised around a familiar formula: teach subjects, prepare students for examinations, award certificates, and move them toward the next stage of education or employment.

That model has produced millions of educated people. But the question facing Nigeria—and, increasingly, the wider world—is whether it is producing the kind of human beings that the next century will require.

A young person may perform exceptionally well in examinations and still struggle to solve unfamiliar problems, manage emotions, work effectively with others, make ethical decisions, create economic value, understand civic responsibility, or adapt to a rapidly changing world.

This raises a fundamental question:

Is the purpose of secondary education simply to produce students who can pass examinations, or should it deliberately develop human beings who can think, create, lead, contribute and live responsibly?

This article proposes the latter.

It presents a conceptual framework for rethinking secondary education as a developmental ecosystem—an environment in which young people progressively discover their capabilities, build competence, test themselves through experience, create value, develop leadership capacity and ultimately contribute meaningfully to society.

The framework is situated within the Nigerian context but addresses a broader educational challenge: how can schooling become a structured environment for developing the whole human being rather than merely transmitting academic knowledge?

The Problem with Education That Stops at Examination Success

Examinations have an important place in education. They can assess knowledge, reasoning and subject mastery. The problem arises when examination performance becomes the dominant measure of educational success.

A system centred excessively on examinations can encourage:

• memorisation over understanding;
• competition over collaboration;
• credential acquisition over capability development;
• passive learning over experimentation;
• short-term academic performance over long-term development;
• dependence on instruction rather than intellectual independence.

The result can be a significant gap between knowing and being able to do.

A student may know the definition of entrepreneurship without ever having created something of value. They may study government without experiencing the responsibilities and consequences of governance. They may learn about ethics without having to make difficult ethical choices. They may study economics without managing a budget. They may learn communication without having to persuade, negotiate or resolve conflict in a meaningful setting.

The issue, therefore, is not that conventional subjects are unnecessary.

The issue is that subjects alone may not constitute a complete developmental system.

Education needs to connect knowledge with experience, capability, responsibility and contribution.

From School as Institution to School as Developmental Ecosystem

The proposed framework begins with a change in perspective.

A school should not be viewed merely as a building in which teachers deliver curriculum content to students.

It can instead be understood as a developmental ecosystem.

Within such an ecosystem, students encounter progressively more complex responsibilities as they mature. They learn, experiment, collaborate, fail, reflect, improve, create, lead and contribute.

The school itself becomes a carefully structured miniature social environment.

Students are not simply told about how society works.

They experience selected aspects of society within a controlled educational environment.

They may encounter:

• economic decision-making;
• collaborative problem-solving;
• leadership;
• governance;
• budgeting;
• project management;
• ethical dilemmas;
• negotiation;
• responsibility;
• accountability;
• creative production;
• technology;
• community contribution.

This does not mean reproducing society’s failures inside a school.

Rather, it means creating a safe developmental environment in which young people can practise the capabilities required to navigate society responsibly.

Clarifying Human Capability

One of the central propositions of this framework is that human capability cannot reasonably be reduced to examination scores.

The framework therefore proposes a broader human architecture consisting of 10 foundational capacities:

1. Intellectual Capacity
2. Ethical Capacity
3. Emotional Capacity
4. Social Capacity
5. Creative Capacity
6. Economic Capacity
7. Physical Capacity
8. Civic Capacity
9. Existential Capacity
10. Adaptive Capacity

These capacities should not be interpreted as ten conventional school subjects.

They represent dimensions of human development.

A person may be intellectually capable but ethically irresponsible. Another may be highly creative but economically ineffective. Someone may possess strong academic knowledge but lack emotional regulation or social competence.

The objective is therefore not to produce students who are equally exceptional in every dimension.

The objective is to ensure that young people develop foundational capability across the human spectrum while progressively discovering areas in which they can develop deeper competence.

This distinction is crucial.

Why Specialisation Should Not Begin Too Early

One of the dangers of educational specialisation is premature narrowing.

A child who is labelled “a science student,” “an arts student,” “a commercial student,” or even “not academically gifted” may have important capabilities that have never been adequately discovered.

The proposed developmental approach therefore begins with broad exposure.

Students should encounter different intellectual, creative, social, physical, economic and technological experiences before being expected to commit themselves to narrow areas of specialisation.

This principle is consistent with the broader purpose of Clarification of Levels: development should progressively move from discovery and exposure toward competence, specialisation, responsibility and contribution.

The question should not initially be:

“What career should this child choose?”

A better question is:

“What capabilities does this child possess, what capabilities can be developed, and where might those capabilities create meaningful value?”

Specialisation can then emerge from informed discovery rather than premature classification.

The Role of Multiple Intelligences

Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences provides an important conceptual basis for challenging the assumption that intelligence is adequately represented by narrow academic measures.

The framework draws on multiple-intelligence thinking as a heuristic for recognising diverse forms of human potential.

However, an important distinction must be maintained.

The ten foundational capacities proposed here are not presented as a replacement for Gardner’s established theory, nor are they claimed to be an established psychological taxonomy.

They are part of a new conceptual architecture proposed by this study for organising secondary education around broader human development.

This distinction matters for academic integrity.

Established scholarship provides the theoretical foundations.

The proposed framework builds upon, combines and extends relevant ideas into a new educational architecture.

The Six-Year Developmental Journey

The proposed model structures secondary education as a six-year developmental journey.

The six stages are:

Year 1 — Discover

The first year is primarily about exposure and discovery.

Students encounter a broad range of intellectual, creative, social, technological, physical, economic and other developmental experiences.

The objective is to help students begin discovering:

• what interests them;
• what they are naturally drawn toward;
• what they can do;
• what they struggle with;
• what they can improve;
• how they interact with others;
• where their emerging strengths may lie.

The emphasis is deliberately on breadth before narrow specialisation.

Year 2 — Explore

Discovery develops into exploration.

Students begin investigating areas of interest more deeply and undertaking increasingly demanding projects.

They begin moving from:

“I am interested in this”

toward:

“I want to understand what I can actually do with this.”

Projects, experimentation, collaboration and reflection become increasingly important.

Year 3 — Build Competence

By the third year, students begin developing more substantial competence.

This is where primary and secondary areas of specialisation can begin to emerge.

A student may discover a particular strength in areas such as technology, communication, creative production, entrepreneurship, leadership, analytical work or another field.

The purpose of specialisation is not to abandon the other dimensions of development.

Rather, students develop depth in selected areas while maintaining foundational breadth.

Year 4 — Create Value

Education now begins to connect capability with ethical value creation.

Students learn that skills can become useful when they solve problems or meet legitimate needs.

They can begin exploring:

• entrepreneurship;
• digital production;
• creative industries;
• technology;
• services;
• product development;
• financial literacy;
• project-based income generation;
• social enterprise.

The objective is not to turn children into profit-maximising entrepreneurs.

It is to teach an important principle:

Capability becomes economically meaningful when it can be converted into legitimate value for other people.

This is the foundation of an Intelligence-to-Value approach: identifying capability, developing competence, solving real problems and learning how value can be created ethically.

The Intelligence-to-Value concept is therefore a proposed component of this educational model, not an established academic theory.

Year 5 — Lead and Govern

The fifth year introduces students to increasingly sophisticated forms of leadership and institutional responsibility.

Students can participate in structured governance simulations and real school responsibilities.

These may include:

• elections;
• budgeting;
• resource allocation;
• project management;
• procurement simulations;
• accountability systems;
• negotiation;
• conflict resolution;
• policy development;
• ethical decision-making.

The purpose is to move leadership education beyond speeches and titles.

A student who wants to become a leader should experience what leadership actually demands.

Leadership means making decisions when resources are limited.

It means explaining decisions.

It means accepting scrutiny.

It means managing competing interests.

It means understanding consequences.

Most importantly, it means learning that power without accountability is dangerous.

Year 6 — Contribute

The final stage is contribution.

Students are expected to bring together the capabilities developed throughout the six-year journey and apply them to a meaningful real-world challenge.

This culminates in a capstone national or community contribution project.

The student is no longer asking only:

“What can I achieve for myself?”

The question becomes:

“What can I contribute?”

That transition is fundamental.

A successful educational system should not merely produce people capable of securing employment or generating personal wealth.

It should produce people capable of using their knowledge, skills, resources and influence to improve the institutions and communities around them.

The School as a Miniature Society

One of the most distinctive features of the proposed architecture is the idea of the school as a controlled miniature society.

Students would encounter a simplified institutional environment in which they can practise responsibilities that adults encounter in the wider world.

The school can contain systems for:

• student governance;
• resource management;
• enterprise;
• project funding;
• elections;
• leadership;
• accountability;
• dispute resolution;
• collaboration;
• institutional decision-making.

This approach creates a bridge between theoretical knowledge and lived experience.

A lesson about democracy becomes more meaningful when students participate in governance.

A lesson about economics becomes more meaningful when students manage limited resources.

A lesson about ethics becomes more meaningful when students confront competing interests.

A lesson about entrepreneurship becomes more meaningful when students create something people actually value.

The school becomes a place where students can practise adulthood before they are fully responsible for its consequences.

The Anti-Corruption and Governance Laboratory

Nigeria’s institutional challenges make governance education particularly important.

Corruption cannot be addressed adequately by telling young people simply to “be honest.”

Ethical behaviour matters, but institutional design matters too.

A system that depends entirely on individual virtue can be vulnerable when individuals fail.

The proposed governance laboratory therefore combines personal ethics with institutional safeguards.

Students can experience controlled simulations involving:

• budget allocation;
• procurement;
• competing interests;
• transparency;
• conflicts of interest;
• accountability;
• checks and balances;
• decision-making under pressure.

The lesson is simple but profound:

Good institutions should not assume that every person will always make the right decision. They should be designed to make accountability possible when people do not.

This reflects important insights from institutional economics and political thought, including the importance of checks and balances and collective governance.

The ultimate objective is to develop a generation that understands both ethical character and institutional accountability.

Learning Through Experience

The proposed ecosystem draws significantly from experiential learning traditions associated with thinkers such as John Dewey and David Kolb.

The central idea is that meaningful learning does not occur exclusively through listening and memorisation.

People learn through:

experience → reflection → conceptual understanding → experimentation → further experience.

A highly creative student might explore design, animation, music, storytelling or other creative industries.

A student with strong interpersonal abilities might develop leadership, negotiation, sales, facilitation or community-building skills.

The point is not that every student must immediately monetise a talent.

Rather, students should gradually understand the relationship between:

capability → competence → problem-solving → value creation → economic opportunity → contribution.

This helps address one of the persistent weaknesses of education: the gap between what students learn and how their capabilities can eventually become useful in the real world.

The Teacher’s Role Must Also Change

A developmental ecosystem requires a different understanding of the teacher.

The teacher cannot remain only an information dispenser.

The teacher increasingly becomes a:

• facilitator;
• mentor;
• assessor;
• project supervisor;
• developmental guide;
• feedback provider;
• ethical role model;
• designer of learning experiences.

This does not make subject knowledge less important.

Quite the opposite.

Teachers need strong subject knowledge while also understanding how to help students apply, connect and extend that knowledge.

The teacher’s task becomes less about asking:

“Have I covered the syllabus?”

and more about asking:

“What has this student actually developed?”

Assessment Must Move Beyond Examination Scores

Examinations should not disappear.

They remain useful for measuring particular forms of academic attainment.

But they should become one component of a broader evidence system.

A developmental school could maintain student portfolios containing evidence of:

• academic learning;
• projects;
• problem-solving;
• creative work;
• leadership;
• teamwork;
• communication;
• enterprise;
• reflection;
• ethical decision-making;
• community contribution.

Such portfolios would provide a more comprehensive picture of development.

The student would not simply graduate with examination results.

They would graduate with evidence of what they can actually do.

Motivation, Autonomy and Student Agency

The framework also draws upon Self-Determination Theory, particularly the importance of autonomy, competence and relatedness in human motivation.

Students are more likely to develop ownership of their learning when they experience meaningful choice, growing competence and connection with others.

This suggests that secondary education should provide structured opportunities for students to make decisions about:

• projects;
• areas of exploration;
• methods of solving problems;
• collaboration;
• creative expression;
• areas of specialisation.

Freedom, however, should not mean the absence of structure.

The developmental ecosystem provides guided autonomy: students progressively receive greater responsibility as their competence and maturity increase.

What Kind of Graduate Should This System Produce?

At the end of six years, the desired graduate is not simply someone who has accumulated certificates.

The desired graduate is a young person who can:

• think critically;
• communicate clearly;
• solve problems;
• understand personal strengths and limitations;
• work with others;
• manage emotions and relationships;
• create legitimate economic value;
• use technology responsibly;
• make ethical decisions;
• understand civic responsibility;
• adapt to change;
• lead responsibly;
• reflect on failure;
• manage resources;
• contribute to society.

In short, the graduate should be capable of thinking, creating, leading and contributing.

From Education Reform to Human Development

The deepest argument of this framework is therefore not about changing a timetable.

It is about changing the purpose of education.

If education is understood primarily as knowledge transmission, then success is measured mainly by what students know.

If education is understood as human development, then the question becomes broader:

Who is the student becoming?

What can the student think?

What can the student create?

How does the student behave when nobody is watching?

Can the student work with people who disagree with them?

Can the student handle responsibility?

Can the student create value without exploiting others?

Can the student recognise corruption and resist participating in it?

Can the student adapt when circumstances change?

Can the student use power responsibly?

Can the student contribute something meaningful to society?

These are not secondary questions.

They are central questions about the purpose of education.

Implications for Nigeria

Nigeria does not simply need more educated people.

It needs people who can make institutions work better.

It needs professionals who can solve problems rather than merely identify them.

It needs entrepreneurs who create value rather than exploit weaknesses.

It needs public servants who understand accountability.

It needs citizens who understand both their rights and their responsibilities.

It needs leaders who recognise that leadership is stewardship rather than entitlement.

Education alone cannot solve every institutional problem in Nigeria. No school model can guarantee that graduates will become ethical leaders.

However, education can deliberately create environments in which young people practise the behaviours, capabilities and responsibilities that a healthier society requires.

That is the opportunity presented by a developmental approach.

A Proposed Educational Architecture for the Next Century

The framework presented here is not intended to replace existing educational systems overnight.

It is a conceptual proposal for experimentation, refinement and eventual adaptation.

Its central architecture can be summarised as:

Broad Development

Expose students to diverse capabilities and forms of intelligence.

Help students recognise their interests, strengths and developmental needs.

Allow students to investigate emerging areas of interest through experience.

Develop deeper capability and informed specialisation.

Require students to apply their accumulated capabilities to meaningful real-world challenges.

This progression represents a movement from potential to capability, capability to competence, competence to value, value to responsibility, and responsibility to contribution.

Conclusion: The Human Being We Choose to Educate

The most important educational question for Nigeria may not be:

“How do we make our students score higher?”

It may be:

“What kind of human beings do we need to develop for the next 100 years?”

Academic knowledge will remain important.

Technology will become increasingly important.

Artificial intelligence will transform work and learning.

Economic capability will matter.

But none of these will be sufficient without ethical judgement, emotional maturity, social competence, adaptability and civic responsibility.

The proposed developmental ecosystem therefore seeks to move secondary education beyond the narrow objective of producing examination success.

It proposes a school in which young people can discover who they are, develop what they can do, test their capabilities, create value, learn to lead responsibly and ultimately contribute to society.

The six-year journey—Discover, Explore, Build Competence, Create Value, Lead and Govern, and Contribute—is not presented as a finished prescription.

It is an invitation to rethink what secondary education could become.

The ultimate measure of education should not be only what a student knows at graduation.

It should also be what that student is capable of becoming—and what that capability can contribute to humanity.

When checking your status on JAMB CAPS, your dashboard will display one of three outcomes:

1. “CONGRATULATIONS… ADMISSION OFFERED”
   • Action: Click ACCEPT to secure your admission place, or REJECT if you do not want the offer.
2. “ADMISSION IN PROGRESS” (AIP)
   • Action: AE-FUNAI has shortlisted your application, and final processing by JAMB is underway. Keep checking your status regularly.
3. “NOT ADMITTED”
   • Action: Subsequent admission batches are uploaded progressively. Ensure your O’Level results are verified on JAMB CAPS and continue monitoring your profile.

How to Check Your AE-FUNAI Admission Status on JAMB CAPS

1.Log in to JAMB Portal:
Action: Access E-Facility.

Visit the JAMB e-Facility Portal using your registered email address and password.

2.Navigate to CAPS Dashboard:
Browser Mode: Enable Desktop Site.

Scroll down and select Check Admission Status. Click Access my CAPS. (If using a mobile phone, switch your browser settings to Desktop Mode to view all sidebar tabs).

3.Check Admission Status Tab:
Action: Verify Offer.

Click on Admission Status on the left menu. If offered admission, click ACCEPT to confirm your acceptance of the offered programme.

4.Print JAMB Admission Letter:
Post-Acceptance.

After accepting your admission, proceed to print your official JAMB Admission Letter and JAMB Result Slip, which are mandatory documents for AE-FUNAI physical clearance and registration.

What if my offer shows a different course from what I applied for?

If AE-FUNAI offers you an alternative programme, navigate to the Transfer Approval tab on JAMB CAPS. Accept the transfer request first; after doing so, your official admission status will update to “Admitted.”

Can I accept my admission from home?

Yes, you can accept or reject your admission offer directly from your smartphone or laptop by logging into your JAMB e-Facility profile. Alternatively, you can send an SMS with ACCEPT or REJECT from your registered phone number to 55019 or 66019.

Why is my status showing “No Admission Given Yet”?

AE-FUNAI releases admission lists in batches (Merit, Supplementary, Direct Entry). If your O’Level results are verified and uploaded on CAPS, continue to monitor your dashboard as additional names are uploaded.
