The Federal Ministry of Education has officially approved the discontinuation of new admissions into the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Pharmaceutical/Pharmacy Technology.
The decision, announced by the Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Prof. Idris M. Bugaje, on August 28, 2025, is in line with global best practices in pharmaceutical manpower development.
Key Details of the Directive
- No New Enrolments: Nigerian institutions will no longer admit fresh candidates into the HND Pharmaceutical/Pharmacy Technology programme.
- Current Students: Those already enrolled in the HND programme will be allowed to complete their studies.
- ND Programme Continues: The National Diploma (ND) in Pharmacy Technician will remain as the recognized sub-cadre in the pharmacy profession.
- Approved Cadres: Going forward, the only officially recognized cadres in the Federal Government’s Scheme of Service are:
- Pharmacist
- Pharmacy Technician

- Council of HND Holders for the Advancement of Polytechnic Education in Nigeria (COHAPEN)
- National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS)
In a joint press briefing on September 3, 2025, both groups described the move as a vital step to safeguard training standards and maintain the integrity of the pharmacy profession in Nigeria.
This landmark reform is expected to strengthen the career path for Pharmacy Technicians and align Nigeria’s pharmaceutical education with international standards.
