The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have jointly given the Federal Government a seven-day ultimatum to resolve lingering labor disputes affecting non-academic staff in Nigerian universities.

In a strongly worded letter dated 12th September 2025, signed by SSANU President, Muhammed Ibrahim, and NASU General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi, the unions condemned:

• The “unjust” disbursement of ₦50 billion Earned Allowances.
• The non-payment of outstanding withheld salaries.
• The non-implementation of the 25/35% salary increments.
• The continued delay in renegotiating the 2009 FGN/NASU/SSANU agreement.

Background of the Dispute

• On 18th June 2025, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of NASU and SSANU wrote a formal complaint to the Federal Ministry of Education.
• Following this, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, convened a meeting with the unions on 4th July 2025, where some resolutions were reached.

At the meeting, it was agreed that a Tripartite Committee (involving the Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission, and JAC of NASU/SSANU) would be set up to address the contentious disbursement of allowances. However, the unions allege that the process has since stalled.

Additionally, the unions claim that while the Federal Government has concluded renegotiation with ASUU (Academic Staff Union of Universities) and is close to signing an agreement with them, non-teaching staff have been sidelined despite submitting all required memoranda.

Unions’ Grievances

1. Skewed Distribution of Earned Allowances:
   • University-based non-academic staff were shortchanged.
   • Staff in Inter-University Centres were completely excluded.
2. Outstanding Withheld Salaries:
   • Members are still owed two months’ salaries withheld during past industrial actions.
3. Salary Increment Arrears:
   • Non-payment of arrears from the approved 25% and 35% salary increments.
4. 2009 Agreement Renegotiation:
   • The review process initiated in October 2024 has stalled after one meeting, while ASUU’s renegotiation has progressed.

The Ultimatum

• Effective Monday, 15th September 2025, the unions have given the Federal Government seven (7) days to act on their demands.
• Failure to do so will result in a series of industrial actions, including a nationwide strike by non-academic staff.
